When you come to install any bidet, it’s best to start at the appliance end and finish by breaking into the water supply pipes. If you do this the water supply to the rest of the home will be disrupted as little as possible.
Connecting the hot and cold water supplies to this type of bidet shouldn’t present any real difficulties. Because you mustn’t mix water from the mains and water from a storage cistern in the same appliance, you can use a mixer only if the bathroom cold water is taken from a cold water storage cistern. The hot water will come from the hot tank, fed in turn from the same cistern. If the bathroom cold water is piped from the mains — in a direct system — then the bidet must have separate hot and cold taps.
Bidets — made, like more conventional washbasins, of ceramic material — normally have a built-in overflow discharging into the waste outlet via a slot in the waste fitting.
Once all the fittings are in place you can stand the bidet in the position where it’s to be fixed so you can work out where the supply pipes and the waste outlet pipes will run. If your bathroom has modern copper or stainless steel hot and cold water distribution pipes then the task of laying in the pipes to the bidet should be fairly straightforward.
You should use 15mm (½in) pipe, and the connections to the tap or mixer tails can be made using a special fitting which has a compression or capillary joint inlet on one side and a swivel tap connector or ‘cap and lining joint’ on the other which attaches to the tap tail. But since the final lengths of the supply pipes to the bidet are likely to be concealed behind the appliance, this is where two short lengths of flexible corrugated pipe with a swivel tap connector at one end can make installation that much easier.
The main bathroom water supplies are usually run in 22mm pipe, so you’ll need 22mm to 15mm branch reducing tees when you come to connect your branch pipe into them. If your bathroom was installed in i5re- metrication days, you’ll have imperial sized 3/4j pipe in place of the 22mm pipe. As you can’t use 22mm fittings with this size pipe, you’ll have to use some form of adaptor.
